A Different Kind of Engagement Session
When most couples think about engagement photos, they picture the beach, a local park, or a beautiful downtown setting. While those locations are always a great choice, sometimes the most meaningful sessions happen somewhere completely unexpected.
This engagement session at The Florida Aquarium in Tampa was the perfect reminder that your engagement photos should reflect who you are as a couple. Instead of chasing another sunset, we spent the evening exploring one of Tampa's most unique attractions, creating photographs that felt both adventurous and personal.
As a Tampa engagement photographer, I love helping couples choose locations that tell their story. Sometimes that means a quiet beach, and sometimes it means wandering through an aquarium surrounded by sea turtles, colorful fish, and sharks.
The Best Time to Visit The Florida Aquarium for Photos
One thing we planned carefully before the session was our arrival time.
We chose to arrive about an hour and a half before closing, hoping the aquarium would gradually become less crowded throughout the evening.
It definitely paid off.
While there were still visitors when we first arrived, each exhibit became quieter as closing time approached, giving us more freedom to slow down, explore, and create beautiful photographs without distractions.
If you're considering an engagement session at The Florida Aquarium, I would absolutely recommend scheduling your visit later in the day whenever possible.
Getting Creative with the Light
The Florida Aquarium isn't necessarily the easiest location for engagement photography.
Unlike an outdoor session with beautiful golden hour light, much of the aquarium is intentionally dim to create a more immersive experience for visitors.
Rather than seeing that as a challenge, I saw it as an opportunity to get creative.
Using the available light throughout the exhibits, I focused on creating photographs that felt artistic, intimate, and true to the atmosphere around us. The darker environment allowed for dramatic lighting, reflections, and unique compositions that simply wouldn't exist anywhere else.
It's one of those sessions that reminds me every location has something special to offer if you're willing to look for it.
One of My Favorite Moments
As the aquarium became quieter, we eventually made our way to the largest viewing window.
Watching sharks glide through the water behind them created one of the most memorable images from the entire session.
It's not every day you get engagement photos with one of Florida's most incredible marine exhibits as your backdrop.
Those photographs quickly became some of my favorites from the evening.
More Than Just Engagement Photos
One of my favorite parts of this session wasn't even taking photographs.
It was slowing down and enjoying the experience together.
As we explored each exhibit, I also photographed many of the incredible sea creatures they had come to see. Those images became part of their final gallery, helping tell the complete story of their evening instead of simply documenting the portraits we created.
I love when engagement sessions feel less like a photoshoot and more like a memorable date together.
The photographs become more meaningful because they're connected to a genuine experience you'll always remember.
Is The Florida Aquarium a Good Place for Engagement Photos?
Absolutely.
While it requires a little more creativity than traditional outdoor locations, it offers something completely different.
